Still Life 2. 2011

This is perhaps my favorite of still lifes I made in my sophomore year in MCA. The light source came from the left side of the drawing. There, you can see a cinder block behind a bottle of wine. The same lantern is at the center and an old miniature grandfather clock next to it. Behind the clock, another glass bottle and in front of the clock an umbrella. Rendering the wine bottle I found, was quite enjoyable. I feel like addressing the different textures of glass, cement, wood and plastic was successful in this piece. This is the first erase away drawing that I finally gave in on using a bit of burnt amber charcoal to accent the cloth dropped down behind the still life and a bit on the different materials. I did not however use a lot of this color. Using too much would've made it look muggy. This is also the only still life where I used white to accent certain areas. The ONLY parts that have a bit of white charcoal are the cinder block and wine bottle label. Erase away. Compressed white, black and burnt amber charcoal. Sophomore.

Still Life 1. 2011

This was an in class assignment. A compilation of different textures. A metal and glass lantern, a table, bones, wooden box and ornaments. Yet another erase away drawing made with both compressed and vine charcoal. I tried to the best of my ability at the time to render each texture accordingly to the material each object is made of.
Note: in class still life/assignments only had a time frame of 20 to 30 mins to make.

Stairs 2011

"Stairs" was assigned to both test our skills with perspective and composition. This was the stair case leading to my dorm apartment. The walls and the floors both had different textures and shading. One was smooth and soft and the other a bit more grainy. I tried using the erase away method in my advantage to accomplish this. However, seeing this now I realize much work was still needed. The railing is quite flattering as well as the lights on the stairs. Compressed charcoal, vine charcoal. Erase away drawing. Sophomore.

Draw an Interior 2011

For this assignment I had to draw an interior. So I took the liberty of drawing the interior of my best friend's dorm room. I enjoyed taking the liberty of making this slightly eerie. I also decided to add a version of him lying in his bed asleep. I wanted the viewer to feel inquisitive about this piece. Needles to say it was a success.

Planar Analisys Still Life 2011

Drawing 2 professor instructed assigned us a still life that we were supposed to make a planar analysis of. So instead of drawing a perfect hula-hoop, I drew a more rough around the edges version using the light reflections as a reference. The media for this is black compressed charcoal, and vine charcoal.The drawing method was erase away.

Negative/Positive 2. 2011

This is a follow up to the first Negative/Positive piece. The media is still the same. Vine and compressed charcoal. Second erase away drawing.

Negative/Positive 2011

First of two in my Drawing 2 class. We were instructed to only draw the positive and negative space in a still life. This is a simple vine and compressed charcoal piece. This was the first time I tried the erase away method of making a charcoal drawing. This is when you completely cover your paper with your media (in this case charcoal) and start to gently erase certain parts.
